<p>I've a wide range of personal interests that I've picked up through my
life, predominantly influenced by my early years growing up in London.</p>
<p>Having been <a href="https://andreimorgan.net/info/background/uclh">born at UCLH</a>, I was then fortunate
to attend two of the schools in London with the most unusual and
progressive head teachers of the time. The first was <a href="http://webfronter.com/islington/priorweston/">Prior
Weston</a>
(<a href="http://priorwestonpta.com/%20|%20memorial%20site%20by%20[Friends%20of%20Prior%0AWeston](http://www.friendsofpriorweston.org/">PTA</a>), which at that time was
run by <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/2011/may/03/henry-pluckrose-obituary">Henry
Pluckrose</a>. For
my secondary education, I attended North Westminster Community School
(<a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/bsp/hi/education/04/school_tables/secondary_schools/html/213_4306.stm">2005 OFSTED report on the
BBC</a>)
which was run by <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/2008/jul/04/mainsection.obituaries">Michael
Marland</a>;
this has now been converted into two academies, with the former "Upper
School" site closing.</p>
<p>Life in London exposed me to many different cultures from around the
world. I was also an avid reader and, combined, these two things
stimulated my curiosity to find out more about how things work: a geek
was created. I got into cycling - including the mechanics of how bikes
worked; I <a href="https://andreimorgan.net/info/background/medical">became a doctor</a> - and learnt how
the human body worked; and, I built myself a computer and installed
<a href="https://www.fsf.org/about/what-is-free-software">free software</a> on it.</p>
<p>I've experienced life overseas, too. I've travelled extensively through
Europe, lived in Belgium, the United States, and Australia, and visited
several countries throughout the Americas; since January 2017, I have
been living in Paris. For entertainment and relaxation, I juggle clubs -
particularly fire clubs. And I maintain my interest in how things work,
trying to learn more about all kinds of systems, from those I can
manually deconstruct to those that need a more theoretical approach.</p>

<h2>Reading list</h2>
<p>This post isn't about COVID-19. At least, not directly: I thought I'd
point out some things tthat are linked to COVID-19, because if you think
that the world is a bit crazy now but you're just playing along until
it's over, I think you've got another thing coming. The world is
seriously fucked up, and it's going to get worse, whichever angle you're
coming from. You know this. Your government knows this. Everyone knows
this. We're all just playing the game: and it is <strong><em>not</em></strong>
finishing any time soon.</p>

<h2>COVID-19: catching up.</h2>
<p><img width="200" align="left" src="https://andreimorgan.net/images/posts/covid_catch_up/mexican.png" alt="Homecooked Mexican
food"> Doesn't the world move quickly? Ten days ago, when <a href="https://andreimorgan.net/posts/covid_update/">I last
posted</a>, France had been in lockdown for a week,
and the UK had just decided to join in. Since then, I've been incredibly
busy - yet have barely left the house: yesterday I did my (what seems to be
becoming my weekly) shop - hence why I was able to make the delicious
Mexican food you see in the picture - and went for a run. First time
I've left the house in a week (yes - since my last shopping) and that
time was the first in a week too. I've been doing <a href="https://www.thebodycoach.com/blog/pe-with-joe-1254.html">PE with
Joe</a> though,
and plenty of other things.</p>

<p>My relationship with <a href="http://wwwl.uclh.nhs.uk">University College
Hospital</a> stretches a long way back; indeed, it
actually began before I was born, when my mother booked her pregnancy
there. And there I was born.</p>
<p>During the years since, I attended a few times: the odd out patients
appointment, or a trip to Accident and Emergency. However, I did not
return properly until 2007, at which point I was starting academic
training at the <a href="http://www.lshtm.ac.uk">London School of Hygiene and Tropical
Medicine</a> around the corner. I had responded to
a request for locums, and locum I did for the following year.</p>
<p>Then, the locum agency (UCLH's staff 'bank' was run by an external
company) started to clamp down on unecessary additional requirements
(for example, immunisations that were extra to those recommended by the
Department of Health for NHS workers). I negotiated a unique, part-time
contract with the department of Neonatology that enabled me to work
directly for the Trust. This allowed me to become better integrated into
the department, and I contributed to development of clinical guidelines.</p>
<p>In 2011, my academic work moved to <a href="http://www.ucl.ac.uk">UCL</a>. Shortly
thereafter, my contract was converted to include a half-time committment
to clinical duties. I also gained responsibility for teaching medical
students and postgraduates on some of the <a href="http://www.instituteforwomenshealth.ucl.ac.uk/education/postgraduate">taught courses run by the
university</a>. I
continue to have an Honorary contract while working in Paris, France, at
<a href="http://www.epop%C3%A9-inserm.fr/en/">INSERM</a> (the French National Institute
of Health and Medical Research).</p>
