<h2>'<em>Les Misérables</em>' - they are everywhere</h2>
<p>There was an article on <a href="https://www.theguardian.com">the Guardian</a>
website this morning about <em>Les Misérables</em>, the film by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ladj_Ly">Ladj
Ly</a>. I've purposefully not linked
to the article here as it gives quite a lot (although not all) of the
story away, and the film will definitely be more impactful if you
haven't read anything about it. Suffice to say that is is well worth
watching - the description that's going around of a "updated version of
<em><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Haine">La Haine</a></em>" is accurate. And
<em>La Haine</em>, of course, is widely thought to be <a href="https://www.bbfc.co.uk/case-studies/la-haine">as relevant today as
when it first came out</a>.</p>
<p>Anyway, I wrote a little bit about some of my experiences in France, so
thought they were also worth sharing here...</p>
<p><a href="https://andreimorgan.net/posts/les_miserables/#more">Read on to hear about them.</a></p>
Cured duckhttps://andreimorgan.net/posts/cured_duck/2023-08-01T14:34:49Z2019-01-12T19:36:34Z
<h2>Cured duck</h2>
<p>I was at work recently when one of my colleagues brought in some cured
duck that he'd prepared. It was delicious - and he told us it was very
easy to prepare. Essentially, you just add salt and pepper and leave it
in the fridge for a few months. What could be easier?</p>

<h2>This is not a democracy!</h2>
<p>A year ago, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catalan_independence_referendum,_2017">1-O
happened</a>. Yesterday
evening, I went to see a <a href="https://directa.cat/el-primer-dia-doctubre/">film about the events of that
day</a> (I actually watched
the version with French subtitiles), the 1st of October 2017, in
Barcelona, organised by the Paris branch of the <a href="https://cdrparis.org/">Comité de Défense de la
République Catalane</a>. It was very interesting,
but to make it clear from the outset: I do not support them.</p>
<p>In fact, the evening made me reflect a bit on referenda - particularly,
given the fact that the consequences of the UK Brexit referendum are
currently playing out, with just a few weeks until the 18th October
deadline for discussions with the (rest of the) European Union.</p>

Mistakes, marathons and medicinehttps://andreimorgan.net/posts/Mistakes_marathons_and_medicine/2023-08-01T14:34:49Z2017-11-30T21:57:36Z
<h2>Mistakes, marathons and medicine</h2>
<h3>tl;dr</h3>
<p>My good friend Chloe was run over by a truck when cycling in London 10
years ago. She would have died had she not been airlifted to hospital by
the London Air Ambulance (LAA). Chloe is now going to run the Marathon
des Sables in April, 2018, and will be raising money for LAA. You can

Movinghttps://andreimorgan.net/posts/Moving/2023-08-01T14:34:49Z2017-02-02T21:22:47Z
<h2>Moving</h2>
<p>I finally moved. I boxed everything up (well, I had a little bit of
help, much appreciated), it was loaded into a van and then, two days
later, it was unloaded in my new apartment in Paris. That was it. I'm
amazed at how compact everything managed to be - and it's interesting
looking at the representations of my life the various cardboard boxes
make.</p>

Beer Can Magichttps://andreimorgan.net/posts/beer_can_magic/2023-08-01T14:34:49Z2017-01-23T20:11:18Z
<h2>Beer can magic</h2>
<p>I moved into my new home in Paris yesterday. It has a paucity of lights
- although this seems to be fairly common in the French homes that I've
been in so far: there is a tendancy to have free-standing lights.
Moreover, it's unfurnished. In this country, that means two things: one,
you get a lease for 3 years (minimum); and two, there's <em>nothing</em> in the
house - no bed, shelves, tables, chairs or any of the things you'd
imagine, but also nothing in the kitchen. Yep, that means: no fridge, no
freezer, and no oven or stove.</p>
<p>But, it's amazing what you can do with a beer can...</p>

Une semaine à Parishttps://andreimorgan.net/posts/Une_semaine_%C3%A0_Paris/2023-08-01T14:34:49Z2016-12-01T22:20:20Z
<h2>Une semaine à Paris</h2>
<p><em>Alors, je suis arrivé!</em> I've been in Paris for just over a week now
(actually, it's closer to two, but let's not get carried away with
details). I'm loving it. The city of romance? I've found it to be a lot
more grungy than that, more like New York than London - but definitely
one of the world's big, great cities. Even if it's small: according to
<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris">wikipedia</a>, "a population in 2013
of 2,229,621" (or, more than 2.2 million in the <a href="https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris">French
version</a>, with greater than 10.6
million if the wider areas are also counted).</p>
<p>What am I doing here? Well, currently, looking for housing - but if you
want to know more, then...</p>
